There are lots of reasons that people buy and give greeting cards, from birthdays and anniversaries to sending thank-yous to customers. Generic cards aren’t very exciting, however. Custom designed cards are also a great way to market to your customers. Creating custom cards are a great way to add something special to any occasion, and they don’t have to be super difficult to design. Read on for some great tips to create a perfect greeting or birthday card.
Start With A Template
There are many templates available, either from your printers or with your design program that you can use as a jumping-off point. This is especially helpful if you have no clue where to start in designing your card. The template will allow you to add or edit the text to fit your unique situation.
Decide On A Theme
You should also design your card around a theme. The theme could be seasonal, like a holiday or season, or it could be specific to the event you’re celebrating, like a birthday. Use the theme to help you choose images and the right words to convey your sentiment.
Set-Up A Design File
Make sure that your design file follows certain conventions. For instance, the resolution should be at least 300 dpi (or Dots Per Inch) and the color profile should be CMYK (you will likely have to manually change this from RGB).
Arrange Your Text And Graphics
Once you’ve collected your graphics, it is time to add them to the file and add your text. The most important thing to keep in mind is that you don’t want to overdo any of it. Your design needs to be clear and readable. You should also include your logo in the design since this is a marketing product.
Don’t Forget To Proof
Once you’ve finished the design, print a proof to check how it actually looks printed out. This is a very important step that many people forget. Printing the proof allows you to ensure that everything prints exactly how it looks on the screen and you don’t end up with a card that looks less beautiful than it could.
Find A Way To Make It Special
Finally, check with the printers to see if they offer any additional extras, such as a high-gloss UV coating that makes the card look rich and professional. You should also have them add scoring and perforation to make the cards easier to use and send.
